If you’re waiting for the next PlayStation, you’ll need to wait for another three years. Sian sia, that’s damn long away.
Talking with the Wall Street Journal, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera clarified when the next console would be released.
We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future.
It looks like the next PlayStation is at least three years away. This is something different from usual eh. Typically the PlayStation release cycle tends to be in the five to six year range. The PlayStation 2 and 3 launched in 2000 and 2006 respectively.
The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013. That means that if 2021 is the approximate release date for the next console, the PlayStation 4 would have an eight year life cycle. Two years longer than the previous generation of PlayStations leh.
Kodera further explained the specific reasoning behind the shift.
We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle. We’re no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things. We need a broader perspective than that because so many things are now connected via the internet.
It seems that Sony is looking out for more than the gaming side of the PlayStation. Understandable given the introduction of Netflix who corner the market with regards to massive online media streaming. Sony can’t keep aiming at gaming with its consoles. Macam lose out on other areas also.
The good news is that PlayStation 4 owners wouldn’t have to fork out money to buy a new console so soon. At least can save some money for now hor? Hopefully, the next console would be able to deliver something even better given the time we have had to wait.
