It’s been such a long time since I’ve played a proper 2 player co-op game and you don’t really see much of these games nowadays. So when I found out a game called A Way Out developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts was out, I knew I had to get my buddy, Justin along and play this game. Some more it’s about breaking out of prison! Power lah!
Now the thing about A Way Out is that you can only play it co-op with a friend or someone online. There is no single player mode here at all. So you have to play the game on a split-screen which is really rare. Ask yourself, when was the last time you played a split-screen game lah? Damn long ago right? Also this game is from a third person perspective.
From the get go, your characters, Leo and Vincent are in a prison which really reminds me of a cult classic prison movie called The Shawshank Redemption especially the first few tasks you have to do. Obviously I chose Leo and my buddy had no choice but to choose Vincent. Leo voiced by Fares Fares who is the older brother of the director of this game, Josef Fares, looks eerily like the actor Sean Penn. That was pretty much why I chose him. Vincent voiced by Eric Krogh, has the looks of a bookie. Perfect.
The gameplay at the start can get a little distracting. I tend to kaypoh and kept looking over at what Justin was doing and vice verse whenever something exciting happens like a brawl or something. After awhile, we got the hang of it and didn’t kaypoh so much. There are moments when both of us have to do tasks together and that’s when it gets fun cause we have to communicate with each other quite a bit. It can be hilarious and there will be Oooos and Ahhhhhs and laughter of course.
I really enjoy a good story driven game and A Way Out has a wonderful story behind it. There are some brilliant plot twists along the way. Now the whole game is not just about breaking out of prison throughout. There are some brilliant plot twists along the way which really makes the ending, bittersweet.
