When and How did Avalon esports come about?
Founded back in 2008 we were then known by many different names (LunatiCxNinja, iniQuity, AeoN). My brother and I were in 2 different teams for about a year before we decided to play together. Despite playing FPS games since the early 2000’s we never really competed in an actual tournament until 2008 when we started playing Garena’s BlackShot. I guess you could say that Avalon eSports came about because we realized that it was difficult for teams to make it and play at a top level as many teams do not have the necessary skills for player management and they disband every now and then, leaving good players demoralized in the long run, leading to them just leaving the competitive scene entirely. We wanted to change that.
What are the games Avaon esports focuses on for competition?
We primarily focus on FPS games, although there were plans to pick up teams from all other genres, mobile included.
How many members are there in Avalon esports?
As with current player expectations and being a non-profit organisation, we currently have 9 competitive players in 2 games (CoD:BO4 and Fortnite) with 5 staff.
You guys have been consistently in competitions since 2009. So what are the plans for Avalon in 2019?
With the current state of eSports in Singapore, we decided to slow things down a notch, keeping things small currently allows us to maintain the quality of the Avalon brand.
What do you think about the current state of esports in Singapore?
The state of eSports in Singapore has been fluctuating. Depending on your point of view, answers will vary. If you are using the number of offline competitions to weigh the state of eSports, then Singapore is in a horrible place right now. However if you are talking about the number of competitions in general then I would say Singapore has been having a steady stream of tournaments, albeit for the most part, mobile tournaments. As a PC gamer myself we are not getting as much competitions as before and many of us are rather disappointed with this fact. Most if not all competitions are being held online now, Singtel, Razer, and SCOGA have been more active in the eSports scene recently, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out.
Is there anything you feel, needs to be improved for esports to grow in Singapore?
Player mentality and public perception of/towards eSports needs to change. Technological advancements happen every day, whereas our mindset about any particular issue seem to be set in stone. People here need to be educated on not just the negative aspects of gaming, but the positive aspects as well. We all need to understand and embrace it, if we are to develop and grow towards a better future. There is also a growing need for personnel who are interested in developing the scene here, just as much as participating in it.
Any words of encouragement, for young aspiring local gamers?
Never give up, no matter what. Most of all, remember this: Chase the dream; Not the competition.
