At the Tokyo Game Show, we managed to find out more about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game. We had a hands on the single player on the Pre Alpha version of the game. I have to say it is really impressive and I cant wait to play it when it is officially released 15th May 2020.
Controls for the gameplay are pretty straightforward. There are your jumps, light attacks and heavy attacks which are chargeable. When using light attacks, you can do quick combos while heavy attacks helps you finish the combo. Heavy attacks are also useful when there are enemies with shields coming at you. You can use a fully charged up heavy attack to break his shield. Dodging can be used for everyone even those who are mid air. You can do finishing moves when the enemies are at a vulnerable spot. Like when they are unconscious or kneeling down. That is the perfect time to do the finishers which you have to press triangle and circle together. Each character has their very own special attacking move, like Ironman has his chest beam that you can aim at enemies or Hulk has his clap which hurts enemies at a close range.
I have to say that the game is easy to pick up and play and every character is distinctively different from each other. Captain America can guard with his shield and use it as a range attack. Thor has his Mjolnir which he can throw at enemies and make it come back to him. Ironman can fly and use his uni beams mid air. Hulk can jump far, hold on to walls and even use smaller enemies as a weapon to bash other smaller enemies. That was damn funny, there was one enemy who kept saying “No.. No..No…” when Hulk was about to pick him up. Black Widow has guns and is good for ranged attacks. And when you fight boss fights, there are timed commands, a la God of war which can be damn fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing Marvel’s Avengers. It is a fun stress relieving game where you can just grab and smash enemies or do what you can with characters with their iconic moves and attacks. My favorite is of course the Hulk. So much fun to play him. Thor was not too bad as well but he kinda sounds like a Russian Thor. Hahaha. Maybe I am too used to an Australian one. The thing I have to say about this game is that you shouldn’t feel its bad just because the voice overs are not the ones you are used to from the movies. Get past that. Play the game for the story and the gameplay. This is an original Avengers story with solo or online play. There are 5 core roster characters and you can customize you own roster of heroes. You can even customize your hero’s outfit. For example Hulk can even wear a suit and fight like a dapper! and the outfits are all purely cosmetic and doesn’t effect how you play.
The story so far, after something terrible happened with Captain America who went down with a helicarrier (or did he?), the Avengers broke up and went their own ways. Five years later, there is a new bunch of bad guys called AIM. Advanced Idea Mechanics who pretty much has surveillance on people with super powers. Stark lost all his fortune, Banner went into a self imposed exile, Natasha does her own thing and Thor thinks he is unworthy. And your goal is to save the Avengers.
There are Hero and Warzone missions. Hero missions focuses on the specific hero, and after you complete these missions, you can advance the story. The more the story unfolds, the more you can unlock hero missions. Each hero mission is designed to create the environment that showcases the uniqueness of each character. You can play Warzone missions as solos or co-op with up to four players. You can play as any hero. but if all four players are going to choose Hulk, that is not gonna happen. You can’t choose the same characters but you can choose all ground or 2 air and 2 ground based characters. Both types of missions will help to advance the story in one way or another.
Marvel’s Avengers will be releasing on 15th May 2020 and there will be an early Beta access for PlayStation 4 users. Time to suit up!
