Grow: Song of the Evertree Review – Roos Heilig
Destruction mostly brings a negative connotation, but every barren land leaves behind a sapling of hope and an opportunity to rebuild those dreams. Backed by the soothing sounds to guide you through, Grow: Song of the Evertree is the newest action strategy game released by 505 Games and soon to be released on various gaming platforms. Get ready to walk the earth and roll up your sleeves, there is a world that needs healing.
The world of Alaria was once resplendent in bountiful nature and ethereal beauty, with its people living in harmony until one day, that joy was taken away from beneath their feet. As the branches of darkness known as The Withering began to tear Alaria apart, all hope was seemingly lost but tucked away in blissful slumber is your protagonist. Known as the last of the Everheart Alchemists, your journey begins upon waking up and being greeted by two talking objects. Do not be alarmed though, as they are your mentors while an opportunity to familiarise with the gameplay. Ultimately, your protagonist has the important task of restoring Alaria through planting The Evertree while fending off the threat of The Withering who are not done with delivering more damage.
Need a ride from the cottage and visiting those hard to reach areas? Fret not, as your mythical creature is there at every step of the way. Like the sphinx/reindeer hybrid, both of your names are customisable and for the latter, appearances can be tailored according to preferences. Despite the magnificent graphics and compelling storyline combined with an amazing soundtrack, 505 Games did not compromise on their gameplay for Grow: Song of the Evertree. From simplicity in its controls to visual aids during every task, toggling between equipment is just a mouse scroll and one click in getting those pesky stumps out. It might seem laborious at first and fruits of your labour does not appear instantaneously but there is a satisfying aspect of sowing those seeds while rebuilding Alaria. If the introduction is to be any indication of what Alaria should look like, then Grow: Song of the Evertree gives you an opportunity to bring beauty through your digital green fingers and sprouting trees of hope.
