I have always been a fan of wrestling since I was a kid and I always remembered having a lot of fun playing old school WWF games like Wrestlemania and Smackdown back then. Playing WWE 2K19 did bring back a lot of memories and reminded me how fun it was playing wrestling games.

It really has been a long time since I played a WWE game and what WWE 2k19 brought to the table was pretty good. Now, I like my wrestling games to be simple and most importantly fun. WWE 2K19 is relatively simple and fun to play. You just need to get used to the controls and get over the learning curve. It’s not as complicated as UFC where the controls are a real bitch to use. For 2K19, the key is not to be kanjiong while mashing the buttons. For example, when you are getting your butt kicked, you have to press the R2 button for a reversal and you have to time it correctly cause if you don’t, it’s either gonna be “too early” or “too late” and you will continually get your butt handed to you.
Now just because the controls are simple, it doesn’t mean that the gameplay is smooth. Some of the moves do look a little rigid and I have difficulty controlling the direction of my Irish whip. This can be especially frustrating when I am playing Royal Rumble and my objective is to throw opponents off the rope. Glitches do happen and that has been a common problem for a few years now but it’s not too bad. Another common problem is the commentary. They say the weirdest shit at the weirdest time but to me it’s hilarious.
One of the best things about WWE 2K19 is creating a wrestler. There have been quite a number of games which have creating a character feature and WWE 2K19 is by far the best. There are so much details you can use for creating your very own wrestler and you can be at it for hours, I kid you not. From facial features, to hair styles, to how you want your body to look and that’s just for appearance. Clothing wise there are layers to create your own style. There is also, how you want your entrance to be like, whether you want the crowd to boo or cheer you, what kind of wrestler you want to be and of course your wrestling moves and finishers. Before playing WWE 2K19, I was having so much fun creating my wrestler and did not get bored at all.
The myPlayer mode is good and has an interesting story about your character as well. You start off at a local wrestling circuit called BCW and you have a chance to go to NXT and the story goes on from there. I also did enjoy the Daniel Bryant showcase mode which pretty much lets you play through the ups and downs Daniel Bryant had.
Apart from creating wrestlers, what WWE 2K19 has on their roster are equally impressive as well. There are quite a number of new wrestlers, that I have not heard of. Well, that’s because I am more familiar with wrestlers from the 80s to WWE Attitude era. Limpeh old school lah. But just as the roster is with current wrestlers, there are some old school classics as well. I squealed with delight, when I saw I could use familiar faces like Hot Rod, Ric Flair, Sting, Razor Ramon, Ricky The Dragon Steamboat, Randy Savage and the American Dream Dusty Roads ( Legends). And there are different variations of Sting and Ric Flair as well! Early days Sting to NWO Sting. WCW Ric Flair to WWE Ric Flair. It’s absolutely brilliant and nostaligc af.
Another interesting mode is the towers. This really reminded me of Mortal Kombat. Choose a wrestler and fight your way to the top of the tower. And to add more fun and laughter, you have to try the Big Head and Pixel Block modes. Pixel Block mode is something kids would really have fun with. The Big Head mode can be damn funny when you are playing with your friends while having a couple of drinks.
All in all, as a wrestling fan, I thoroughly enjoyed playing WWE 2K19 with my friends and had fun. I highly recommend any wrestling fans be it young or old, to go get WWE 2K19.
WWE 2K19 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
