So I have finally completed Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2. This is the second most anticipated game, I was looking forward to this year. Before I start, I would like everyone to know, that I am what you call a Rockstar fanboy or Rockstar slut as some of my friends would affectionately call it. I have pretty much played every Rockstar game available. From the very first Grand Theft Auto, I became a fan and have supported them all the way. When Red Dead Redemption came out, I absolutely loved it. I thought to myself, these guys just can’t go wrong lah. Well… They did with Red Dead Redemption 2.
This game took up about 140 GB of space on my PlayStation 4. Immediately after downloading, I started my RDR2 journey with excitement.
I really enjoyed the first half of the game. Breathtaking sceneries. I would just ride my horse from one place to another. The open world is bloody huge. I was in total awe as I slowly opened parts of the map. There are characters, I remembered from the first game, like Uncle, Abigail and John Marston of course. The voice overs were fantastic as well. There are times, I started talking like a cowboy to my girlfriend, much to her annoyance. Kept calling her Ma’am and tilting my imaginary cowboy hat every now and then. All was going well until about 50 percent of the game. Basically chapter 6 onwards lah. That’s when it started to get weird. There were quite a number of main missions that had some weird shit going on or glitches. OK, glitches here and there I understand, it happens though it can be really irritating. What I got really annoyed was the plot towards the end.
Arthur had to die no matter what. I totally get that. If you played the first Red Dead, you would know this is a prequel and your main character has to go. To me it was pretty cool that he was dying from TB and he was trying to do good towards the end. Despite Chapter 6, being quite a bore to play, I still thought the way Arthur died was nice. Fella going out in the sunset, it was sad but it was a good death. Just like them feels I got at the first Red Dead Redemption. There are different endings and this all depends on your honour level of course and how you chose your path. To get the money or help John. I’m a nice guy so naturally I helped John and my Honour level was high.
Now, if the game had ended there, I would be totally fine and quite satisfied but Nooooo….. they had to add 2 epilogues. Which to me was the dumbest thing to do. You just killed off your character which you have spent quite a number of hours with so you are still kinda attached to him. So why is there a need to throw in 2 long ass epilogues to play John Marston. For What???? Why do you want to do the same thing as the first game? In the 2 long ass epilogues, you have to do stupid shit missions like building your freaking house and milking cows???? WHY??? Just by playing that 2 shit epilogues, got me so pissed and made me forget about poor Arthur Morgan. That was not cool, Rockstar… not cool at all. And that part where you as John Marston confront that wretched Micah Bell and lo and behold, appears Mr Dutch “I have a plan” Van Der Linde. This fella always thinks he has a plan and his plans always turns to shit. So now you have a three way Mexican stand off and the next thing you know, Dutch shoots Micah and just walks off like balong long… What in blazing saddles was that lah? Yet that was still not the end. The very end is, John and Abigail will stand on the edge of a cliff which will become their graves. I jumped off the cliff to kill myself. To my dismay, I did not die.
There aren’t many story based games around. I am very particular when it comes to stories. You have to give me closure and a good end. Don’t give a shit whether people would not like a sad ending or not. You can’t just wuss out and do unnecessary epilogues to appease those who are going to be butt hurt.
With that being said, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good game. I enjoyed playing it. It’s amazing, it’s fun and visually beautiful. It just has an ending that sucks ass. I’m sorry, Rockstar. I love you and I will still continue to buy your games. Just don’t do any epilogues on my beloved GTA series.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
