One of my most anticipated games for 2018, was Battlefield V and it did not disappoint me one bit. I have been a fan of the Battlefield franchise for a long time now and have played pretty much all of their games. My favorite has always been Battlefield 3. Battlefield 1 which was based on World War 1 was a modest effort but I didn’t really like it. To be honest I got really bored with it. So When Dice announced that the new Battlefield will be based on World War 2. Mua was happy cos I love WW2 history. So after playing it, despite a few quirks here and there, BFV is definitely worth the wait.
The intro for BFV is definitely one of my fav intros for a game. You get to be infantry, drive tanks and fly planes and every end is damn doom. Just goes to show that war is not good even though playing it as a game is fun. Visually, Battlefield V is stunning. Some of the maps like Rotterdam, Narvik, Fjell and Arras are beautiful. It is obvious a lot of research and work has been done for this game. Mad respect to the sound design department lah. I loved the sounds especially stuff like the movement and firing of the tanks and the planes. They really sound authentic. One of my favorite sound is when I am firing bolt action rifles like the Gewehr M95/30 or Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk I. Damn shiok until I feel like the bible quoting sniper in Saving Private Ryan. Or when you are dying and you are begging for someone to revive you but no one does because you think you are freaking Rambo and go balls in to enemy territory without any back up. It can be a little eerie but that’s how I would probably sound if I needed to be revived, I guess.
As much fun, I had playing Battlefield V, there are problems with it. Gameplay is good but sometime it can be glitchy af. Sometimes, I can’t revive people cos their body is dangling in mid air like a scene from The Exorcist. I don’t know if I want to revive or exorcise the poor fella. Sometimes, I can get stuck in debris where I can’t move anywhere so no choice have to redeploy (kill yourself in other words) and it can be really frustrating. Even worse is some of my kills or assignments do not get registered and I have to go through it all over again especially in timed events for Tides of War.
Maps wise, I do like almost all of them except for Hamada. I just found it too plain and almost everyone will be a bloody sniper. My favourites are Twisted Steel, Devastation and Rotterdam. These maps are pure chaos. Kill or be killed. Fun!
I do like some of the new things you get to do in the game, like building forts when you have captured a flag. This can help you rake up some points and it is also good for defending that captured post. And if you like to play long games, then playing in “Grand Operations” will suit you. Three different game modes combined into one “Grand Operation”. With a good squad, you can rake up a lot of points in a match which can go on as long as 2 hours. You don’t always get a good squad, so that depends whether you have taken a flower bath or not, or you can play with your friends.
The vocations are pretty much the same. Assault, Medic, Support and Recon. My favs have always been Support and Medic but lately I have been using Recon quite a bit, Partly because of the sound of the bolt action rifles.
All in all, Battlefield V is still a fun online FPS game and you can get hooked to it for hours. The whole somber tone of the game can be a bit confusing for some but I loved it. As much fun as you can have, it does teach you a thing or two about war.
Battle Field V is a definite return to form for Dice and I will be looking forward to the expansions especially the battle royale mode, Firestorm. And who knows, maybe the next Battlefield game will be more of a fun and lighthearted tone? Bad Company anyone???
