Tickets to Dating Sim are on sale now. Dating Sim (beta ver. Zoom), a choose-your-adventure theatre/game experience by Participatory theatre collective ATTEMPTS will be on 13th and 20th December this year.
This is a 50-minute theatre/game experience that offers a refreshing perspective on dating-simulation games, inviting the audience to examine their agency and prejudices in modern dating and relationships. The game-play is an exciting intersection between technology, video games, and theatre. Traditional dating-simulation games tend to be heavily androcentric, and presented with the male gaze in mind. The Zoom edition lends itself perfectly to the dating-sim genre, offering a more intimate, voyeuristic experience than the ‘live’ edition.
This is the third edition, following two successful sold-out editions in 2019 and 2020 The first edition of Dating Sim (beta) played to full houses at Centre 42’s “Late Night Texting” festival in 2019, while the second edition of Dating Sim (beta) — named Data Sim (beta ver. Zoom) — was presented via Zoom, at the Thornhill Virtual Fringe Festival in August 2020 Game-designed by Rei Poh, directed by Cheryl Tan Yun Xin, and co-written by Rei Poh and Zee Wong, there are more than 30 different timelines and scenarios in the show. The audience gets to determine what happens, with their choices at key points during the show.
“We want to create something that is absorbing and fun, with a side of provocation – there’s something thrilling about choose-your-own-adventure games, and peeking into others’ dating lives. At the same time, we hope to get people thinking about their own perspectives and blind spots when it comes to romantic relationships.” – Game designer, co-playwright and ATTEMPTS founding member Rei Poh
