Echoes of Aincrad – Sword Art Online: Review

Echoes of Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad takes a refreshing approach to the long-running Sword Art Online game series: instead of stepping into Kirito’s shoes once again, you create your own avatar and live the Aincrad death game from scratch. It’s a compelling premise, and once the game lets you loose, it largely delivers on it. Getting there, however, requires some patience.

Echoes of Aincrad - Sword Art Online

A Tutorial That Overstays Its Welcome

The first hour is a slog. The game eases you in so cautiously that it borders on uneventful, drip-feeding mechanics in a way that feels more draining than helpful. For a story built around life-or-death tension, the opening stretch carries surprisingly little urgency. It’s the kind of slow burn that risks losing players before they’ve seen what the game actually offers.

Push through it, and the experience opens up considerably.

Echoes of Aincrad

A World Worth Climbing

Once the tutorial releases its grip, Aincrad reveals itself as a vibrant and layered world. Each floor brings new environments to explore (towns, plains, caves, dungeons) along with mysterious characters, quest threads, and rare treasures to hunt down. The map expands gradually as you progress, giving the climb a real sense of scale and forward momentum.

The single-player MMO structure works well here. Hub towns with quest boards and terminals, open zones with field enemies and dungeon bosses, crafting and gear upgrades. It all comes together into a loop that genuinely captures the fantasy of being trapped in an MMORPG and carving out your own survival story within it.

Combat With Real Weight

The combat is one of the stronger aspects of the game and a noticeable step up from earlier SAO entries. Real-time swordplay built around parry slashes, dodge slashes, reversals, and stamina management gives fights a deliberate, skill-rewarding feel. Sword Skills can be chained and timed for extra impact, and four difficulty modes (including a hardcore Death Game Mode that mirrors the lethal stakes of the source material) mean you can tune the challenge to suit your appetite.

The AI partner system rounds things out nicely. You can customise your companion’s gear, skills, and tactics, and building synergy with them unlocks powerful combo attacks. It adds a layer of strategy to combat without overcomplicating what is fundamentally a solo experience.

Customisation as a Strength

Character building is flexible and genuinely rewarding. Whether you lean toward speed, strength, intelligence, or endurance, the stat allocation and equipment systems give you real agency over your playstyle. For players used to more rigid JRPG structures, that freedom is a welcome change, and it gives the long-haul progression something meaningful to build toward.

Echoes of Aincrad

Worth the Climb

Echoes of Aincrad won’t win over players looking for a tightly paced, immediately gripping action RPG. The opening is too slow for that, and some mission design leans repetitive as the hours add up. But for fans of JRPGs who enjoy gradual progression, deep customisation, and a world that rewards exploration, there’s a lot here to sink into, SAO fan or not.

It’s a game that asks for your patience upfront and pays it back generously once the real adventure begins.
