Don’t play play. Singapore isn’t just the little red dot it used to be anymore. Recently, Singapore hosted the Trump-Kim summit, leaving our name into history. The same could be said for games as well. As it turns out, Singapore can be found to be mentioned and shown in various games as well. We’re going to take a look at Singapore in video games throughout the years.
Battlefield 4
Singapore is the fourth mission which features Changi Airport in the Battlefield 4 Campaign. The mission involves Tombstone squad, US Marines and armoured assault groups tasked by Garrison to strike an airfield in Singapore under Admiral Chang’s control before his military jets take off to wipe out the surviving US Naval fleet ships in the nearby South China Sea.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
In the mission, the player controls a Join Special Operations Command team called Kraken, tasked with infiltrating the docks. The goal is to secure jammers scattered throughout the docks. In addition, the player has the ability to control friendly Quadrotors, CLAWs and drones to make killing enemies easier and destroy other robots. After defeating all the enemies, players call in one final airstrike to destroy a freighter in the docks.
There is also a multiplayer map called Cargo, based on the Strike Force mission which also appears in the game.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III
Singapore was one of the settings for the main campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Our island appeared in the levels “In Darkness”, “Provocation”, “Hypocenter” and “Vengeance”. The player along with Jacob Hendricks are sent by Rachel Kane to investigate a CIA station gone dark and the ruins of the Coalescence Corporation headquarters. The Safe House is also located in Singapore as well.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
In Deus Ex: Human Revolution, protagonist Adam Jensen stows away on a Belltower ship from Hengsha to Singapore to rescue the kidnapped Sarif Industries scientists. The player infiltrates the Omega Ranch, a research facility in Singapore. The building was once known as the Disease Control Initiative when it was initially founded by the World Health Organization. It was renamed to Omega Ranch after being taken over by Darrow Industries.
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun
In the sixth mission of Medal of Honor: Rising Sun players are sent to Singapore. The mission is named ‘Singapore Sling’, after the cocktail and Chinatown is present in the level as well. The player has to make contact with the undercover OSS agent and find and infiltrate the Axis summit while staying under cover.
F1 Series (2009-2017)
Making its debut in F1 2009, Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit was added to the game and has been featured in every edition since. This probably features one of the most authentic replication of Singapore. Racers can even see the Singapore Flyer in the background.
Need for Speed: Nitro
There are five cities which are a part of Need for Speed: Nitro, Singapore being one of these cities. Each city has two full race circuits and the races in Singapore all take place during sunset. You can see the Merlion, Esplanade and the Singapore Flyer in the background while driving. Nice design la.
Battle Cats
That’s right, Singapore was in Battle Cats. Singapore is the 9th stage in Empire of Cats, the first stage in the game. At the same time, the Merlion is also featured in the stage. Xiao cute only.
Honourable Mention
Just Cause 2
Just Cause 2 didn’t feature Singapore but Bolo Santosi, the main villain in the game is worthy of note. Why? Because of Bolo Santosi’s accent. The voice actress of Bolo Santosi, London-based Liza Sutherland, stated that the producers of the game wanted something different and new to the western ear. So Sutherland created an exaggerated version of the Singaporean accent.
Hitman: Agent 47 (2015 film)
Singapore’s famous landmarks were featured prominently in Hitman: Agent 47 (2015). Locations such as The Esplanade Theaters on the Bay, The Arts House, The Supreme Court, The Art Science Museum at Marina Bay Sands and The Singapore Flyer can all be seen in the trailer and posters of the 2015 Hitman movie.
Elite Dangerous
While this space adventure simultation MMO doesn’t feature Singapore per se, it has an announcer prattling off in a Singaporean accent when you call at an Imperial dock. Machiam like you just flew into Changi Airport lor. You know it’s legit because Singaporeans love to use the word ‘decorum’ whenever possible. You can check out the authenticity of the accent for yourself in the video below.
