SGCC 2019 was a fun event and it was a weekend well spent. It was a good thing we headed there early in the morning cos by noon time, the queue was crazy! The Singapore Comic Con was held at Marina Bay Sands Convention Center on the 7th – 8th December.
I have to say it really does feel a lot more bigger than the previous year. There were more booths to check out. I’m pretty sure comic book fans had it good as there were some legendary artists attending this event. You had artists like Greg Capullo, Jock, Andy Kubert, and David Mack, toy designers Jason Freeny and Tara McPherson being there and so many fans queuing up to get their autographs and taking photos with them as well. And it wasn’t just the comic book fans having all the fun, there were gamers such as gamers Alodia Gosiengfiao, Topson and Viva La Dirt League and cosplayers Astarohime and Jin (behindinfinity).
There were also some beautiful looking statues and merchandise from various exhibitors such as XM Studios, Tokidoki, Mighty Jaxx and the creators at Artist Alley. Some of my favs, were Red Hulk, Thanos, G1 Megatron and Iron Maiden’s mascot, Eddie riding a freaking dragon!
For gamers, there was PVP Esports @ Singapore Comic Con by Singtel who held a Corporate League Final as regional teams battled it out in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Dota 2. Gamersaurus Rex also held tournaments all day long with games such as Dungeons vs. Dragons, Warhammer, and Song of Ice and Fire.
One of the best highlight in my opinion along with quite a number of people I have met, was the Singapore Pro Wrestling (SPW). Each of their segments lasted an hour and to me, it was definitely the biggest draw for this event. Everyone was cheering and booing the good guys and the heels and I have to say kudos to SPW. These guys and girls were fun and amazing to watch. Mad respect to all of them. It is not easy doing what they do, putting their body on the line for entertainment.
My second best highlight would be none other than Star Wars 501st legion. These guys were all decked out in their cool Star Wars costumes and boy were they amazing. And they were asking for donations from the public for charity which was a really nice thing to do. Plus, the Mandalorian unit just reeked of total coolness.
On the second day of SGCC 2019, The Championships of Cosplay final was on the main stage. Cosplayers competed against each other and was judged by guest judges, Bernard Phee, Astarohime and Jin (behindinfinity). In the end, Danniel Adi Putra won and was crowned as the overall champion for the Championships of Cosplay 2019. His prize was an all sponsored trip to represent SGCC at the prestigious cosplay competition at Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) in 2020 as well as a cash prize and tickets to SGCC 2020. Awesome!
There was something for everyone at this year’s SGCC. Everyone who attended had a good time and clearly they were having fun. I know I did. Looking forward to next year’ SGCC and I sure hope it gets bigger than this year!
