An Interview with Soul Calibur 6’s Producer

Geralt of the Witcher series joins Soulcalibur 6! Fooooooo!

At the recent GameStart 2018, Jioplaygame had the opportunity to interview Soul Calibur 6 Producer, Motohiro Okubo.

When you first started working on Soul Calibur 6, looking at the previous iterations in the franchise, which aspect of the series do you feel, was the most popular among fans?

We realize that the fans really enjoyed the world view and the stories of the Soul Calibur series, so we really wanted to focus on the story and world view this time round. As you know this is a fighting game, so we also really wanted to get the feel of Soul Calibur just right. Like the weapon moves, how it flows, how it hits, how it reacts and how real sword action would feel. The fans have told me that this is the Soul Calibur that they’ve always wanted to play and I was glad when I heard this response.

If you wanted to add more features to Soul Calibur 6, what would they be?

For Soul Calibur 6, the features we focused on were the fighting and the story. It may not be the answer that some people are looking for but in my opinion, these two features are the most important in the SC franchise. I haven’t really thought of anything much yet, but if I wanted to add a new feature, it would be to work on the PvP aspect and maybe some new different modes. Don’t take my word for it though as it’s just my opinion. Nothing is confirmed at this point.

What about VR?

Tekken 7 has the VR feature so there were lots of things we had to think about when we were working on the VR for Tekken 7. We actually thought of implementing it on SC6 but there are a lot of things to consider and we still don’t have anything definite yet. We do have the technology and the expertise to work on the VR aspect of the game but we are still wondering what is the best way to present VR to the fans at home.

The Soulcaliber franchise has a large following in South East Asia. In fact, 2 of the top SC
players in South East Asia are from Singapore. Are there any plans to introduce new characters
from SEA countries into Soulcaliber VI?

We are aiming to take the best from the different Soul Calibur games from the past and we do know that there are many strong players in Singapore and there is a big fan base here as well, but that is not what we are focusing on currently. From the line up and balance of the game, we made many characters with different weapons and styles. I’m very sure that players will enjoy the huge variety of characters and weapons that are in this game.

In the Create A Soul mode, is every game character battle style available for us to use or are we limited to only specific battle styles?

You can use every character weapon style. We’ve got approval from CD Projekt Red so you can use Geralt’s weapon style for the Create A Soul mode as well. Previously we had Darth Vader and all but we couldn’t use them. This is a first in the series.

What about NPCs like boss characters, are we able to use those styles as well or just playable characters only?

Apart from Inferno, all NPCs styles are accessible and can be used.

Other than Geralt, will there be any other crossover characters (especially old crossover
characters like Kratos, Spawn, etc.) that players can look forward to?

At this point of release, we can only confirm Geralt. There will be a season pass that is coming out for SC6 and there will be new characters, but whether it has guest characters or not, is something that we are unable to disclose at the moment. However, we want to listen to what the fans say, so we will definitely be taking the fans’ feedback into consideration.
